Addis Ababa, Dec 30, 2025 – Abdiisaa Baancaa, a nationally and internationally recognized ICT expert, has shared his insights on Ethiopia’s Digital 2030 Plan, emphasizing the country’s path toward global competitiveness.
Abdiisaa is currently running for the position of Vice President of the Internet Society, Ethiopia Chapter, an organization focused on expanding internet access, ensuring cybersecurity, and providing training, research, and community support in collaboration with government institutions, experts, and civil society. However, with over 85% of Ethiopians still lacking internet access, the initiative faces significant challenges.
Digitizing the Oromo Language
Abdiisaa also serves as Coordinator for Ethiopian Languages at the Afan Africa Association (3A). The association has contributed to integrating five major Ethiopian languages — Oromo, Amharic, Tigrinya, Afar, and Somali — into Google Translate.
Challenges Facing Oromo Language Digitization
Limited support from both the government and the community has hindered Oromo from achieving high-quality translations. Experts argue that for Oromo to become a global language of technology, broader collaboration is necessary.
Collaboration with Linguists and Colleges
Among the five African language coordinators, Ethiopia has one representative (Abdiisaa), while Kenya and Nigeria have two each. He has collaborated with linguists from 13 colleges to improve the quality of Oromo translations on Google.
